Do you struggle with new or unfamiliar exercises? Are you not feeling them the way that you’re supposed to, engaging the right muscles or feeling the right stretch? Yeah, that’s normal, and that’s part of the process. Here’s a good personal example-
Here’s a video of me doing Nordic hamstring curls, and for the first time, being able to do them without assistance. I’ve been an athlete my entire life and started lifting weights when I was a freshman in high school. But the Nordic hamstring curl is one exercise that I have never done consistently before. I’ve been doing these weekly for about two months, but they haven’t really made sense to me. I had some pretty crazy intense engagement in my hamstrings, but as far as being able to lower myself to the ground, and then come back up? I had no clue how to do it. So I worked on it every week. I tried to notice new things. I concentrated on the muscle awareness and feeling it the way I was supposed to. I kept pushing myself to relative exhaustion.
And then… One day it clicked. I could feel the strength to lower myself down with more control. I noticed that I could use a band to help get myself back up. Not unassisted yet, but I was close… The next week, I recorded this video. 8 weeks, and it clicked. And I was able to do 3 full reps. Did I do it as well as a fitness influencer on Instagram? No. Did I go as deep as I wanted to? No. But I did it really well based on MY standards, and I was super proud of that. Just goes to show that even if you can’t do something right the first time, you just keep doing it. Your body learns. You adapt. Even if it doesn’t seem like you’re learning it… you are.
