You may have seen the new study revealing the presence of 25 different types of harmful flame retardants detected in human breast milk in the United States. These chemicals are commonly used in plastics, televisions, appliances, and electronics. This revelation is particularly alarming because these flame retardants are believed to be potent neurotoxins, especially for children who are still in the process of development. Although efforts to ban one type of flame retardant, known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been successful, they have been replaced by another unsafe chemical called bromophenols. Research has demonstrated that these chemicals can disrupt hormone levels in infants and are associated with learning difficulties, hormone disruption, and reduced fertility. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to minimize your family's exposure to flame retardants: 1. AVOID POLYURETHANE FOAM: Steer clear of products made with polyurethane foam, such as nap mats. Instead, opt for alternatives that are free from flame retardants. 2. CHECK LABELS: When shopping for furniture, search for labels that state "CONTAINS NO ADDED FLAME RETARDANTS." This will assist you in finding safer options for your home. 3. AVOID CALIFORNIA TB 117 STANDARD: Ensure that children's products are not labeled as compliant with the California TB 117 flammability standard. 4. MAINTAIN CLEANLINESS: Maintain a clean home environment to reduce exposure. Regularly wash hands, use wet dusting and mopping techniques, and consider using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
